A balut is a fertilized duck egg with a nearly developed embryo inside. A perfect balut is at 17 days old. Traditionally boiled and simply eaten with salt and vinegar, it has been further developed into bottled gourmet balut which comes in three flavors namely in brine, afritada and caldereta.
